Your First Consultation - What to Expect

Transcript

Hello - I'm Kumar Kunasingam, a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in foot and ankle conditions. Having played university and club rugby and hockey - and still playing club hockey today; I understand how frustrating sports injuries can be. I have also coached rugby and hockey, which helps me appreciate the physical and mental stresses carried by athletes of all ages, including younger athletes in particular. The foot and ankle are particularly vulnerable during sport because they absorb repeated impact and sudden directional changes. Common injuries include ankle sprains; Achilles tendon problems; stress fractures; and midfoot sprains. Quick and accurate diagnosis is essential because untreated injuries can lead to chronic problems, and prolonged time away from sport. As well as being an orthopaedic surgeon, I hold a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine, and have had the privilege of looking after athletes at all levels - both here in the UK and abroad. This includes rugby, hockey, and athletics - from grassroots to premiership and international level - including Olympic athletes. This background allows me to understand the specific demands of different sports, and the importance of getting athletes back to full activity safely - without risking re-injury. Whether you are a weekend enthusiast or competing at elite level, I tailor my approach to your individual goals. Accurate diagnosis is the first step - I combine a detailed clinical examination with appropriate imaging, such as X-rays, ultrasound, or MRI. This ensures we understand exactly what is injured, and plan the most effective treatment. Treatment depends on the injury - and your goals. Many sports injuries respond well to physiotherapy, activity modification, and gradual return to training. Bracing or taping can provide support during recovery. For more significant injuries, surgical repair may be needed to restore full function, and prevent long-term problems. Stress fractures deserve special mention. These small cracks in bone develop from repetitive loading and are common in runners and athletes who rapidly increase training. Early diagnosis is important because continuing to train on a stress fracture, can lead to a complete break requiring more complex treatment. When surgery is required, I use minimally invasive techniques wherever possible. Keyhole surgery typically means smaller incisions; less tissue damage; and faster recovery. This approach can be used for ankle instability repair, Achilles tendon surgery, and treating cartilage damage. All with the aim of helping athletes return to competition sooner with reduced scarring. I believe early rehabilitation is essential for athletes. Working closely with physiotherapists, I develop individualised recovery programmes that restore strength, flexibility, and confidence. The goal is not just to heal your injury, but to return you to sport performing at your best while minimising future risk. If a sports injury is keeping you from the activities you enjoy, please contact my team to arrange a consultation. I look forward to helping you get back in the game safely and confidently.
